About the Fund
Howard Cook grew up on a farm near Lincoln, where he developed a strong work ethic from an early age, helping with farm work and transporting children to school in all weather conditions. He attended Lincoln High School, commuting by train and working on the farm on weekends. After school, he worked for a local lumber company, first delivering coal by horse-drawn wagon and later becoming the go-to person for fixing their early trucks. His mechanical skills and personable nature led him to manage a gas station, where he built a reputation as one of Lincoln’s best auto mechanics. Howard worked there until age 70, mentoring many Lincoln High students along the way. Passionate about cars and dedicated to integrity in his work, Howard would have wanted to support future mechanics, making this fund a fitting tribute to his legacy.
This fund was established by Cook's daughter, Barbara Rino in honor of her father. Barbara and her sister both attended Lincoln High School. The purpose of this fund is to provide support to students seeking a career in automotive technology or a career in the automotive industry. Funds may be used for dual credit tuition support or automotive tools needed for class. The number of students supported will be determined annually depending on the current payout of the fund.
