At Irving Middle School, music is more than a class—it’s a community. Dozens of students show up early at 7:00 a.m. for morning choir, rehearse during the school day, and stay after school in small groups, all because they care deeply about the sound they create together.
Their choir teacher, Mr. Robb, saw a growing need: quality microphones that could truly capture the power and beauty of a large choir. As performances grew and programs expanded, it became clear that the current equipment just wasn’t enough. Rather than letting that challenge linger, a group of choir students decided they wanted to help.
Inspired by Mr. Robb and motivated by their love of music, three students organized a bake sale from start to finish. They baked banana bread, cake pops, Rice Krispies treats, cookies, and brownies—all homemade and all with no help from their parents. They promoted the sale with flyers at school and social media posts, and on the day of the event, teachers, neighbors, and fellow students drove by to show their support.
In just three hours—from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.—they sold out completely and raised nearly $800.
As one student shared, “He’s a really good teacher, so we thought we should do something, and it became a bake sale.”
Thanks to their leadership and generosity, the Irving music program was within $1,000 of its fundraising goal. This month, a generous donor fulfilled the funding, so Mr. Robb can purchase three Earthworks Flexwand microphones to support choir, musicals, band, orchestra, and other large-group performances.
Mr. Robb hopes to have the microphones ready for the 7th-grade musical at the end of February and all spring concerts. “We did it! Our choral microphones have been fully funded. Thank you so much for all of your support of our Irving students and the music department at Irving!”
