Desiree Bartels is a recent graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Performance and Theatre Directing and Management from the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film. Her work as a theatre artist spans from performance to stage crew, though her passions lie primarily in theatre administration, children's theatre, and arts activism. Desiree was fortunate enough to cultivate these passions last summer as the Marketing and Administrative Intern for Seattle Children's Theatre and a 2017 Fellow of the Artist as Citizen Conference at the Juilliard School. She was able to use her experiences in completing her undergraduate thesis, Bridging the Gap, a research and creative project which integrated forms of social justice theatre into interactive children's theatre curriculum. She is thrilled to continue developing her curriculum portfolio and working with the students of Spark this summer!
Originally from Tobias, Nebraska, Desiree has grown up experiencing the best of Nebraska and Lincoln, especially Husker football, the Lied Center for Performing Arts, and the Lincoln Children's Zoo. When she is not spending her time in the theatre, she most enjoys experimenting with various cooking recipes, reading, spending quality time with her family, cross-stitching, and re-watching episodes of Parks and Recreation (for the 15th time). She looks forward to a summer full of all of these activities, as well as traveling to New York and learning more about the world around her with her fellow Sparklers.
