Vocal Assessment - Digital Voice Recorders

Vocal Assessment – Digital Voice Recorders Irving Middle School has been blessed with a large number of students who participate in the choral music program. As each choir continues to grow, I face the challenge of evaluating each student in a large ensemble setting. It is crucial that I have a good understanding of each student’s vocal development, to help guide me in selecting music, providing accountability, and also to help that student continue to improve his or her vocal skills. Having access to five digital voice recorders will allow me to evaluate five choir members each day. As we move through the rehearsal a digital recorder will be assigned to a student for the day. They will be taught how to use the recorder and given the instruction to sing into it during portions of the class. I will then collect the recorders at the end of the period and be able to go back and evaluate each student’s progress. Having these digital recorders will allow me to: 1. Grade each student on an individual basis without having them sing solo in front of the class. 2. Have a better understanding of how each voice in the choir is developing. 3. Students will be held more accountable for the parts learned in each song. 4. I will be able to assist and identify any student that might need to work with me individually. 5. I will be able to develop my lesson plans to address issues I might hear while listening to each individual student. Please consider supporting the choral music department at Irving Middle School!
