Parents as Writing Partners
The school improvement goal at Fredstrom Elementary School is for all students to improve their skills in written communication across the curriculum. Current writing assessment results indicate our students have made substantial progress towards this goal. We are however, continuing to implement interventions, which will give our students additional support. Research shows when schools, families and community groups work together to support learning, children do better in school, stay in school longer, and like school more. The Staff at Fredstrom Elementary plans and facilities many school and family activities throughout the school year and is currently in the process of organizing a presentation on writing for parents. We would like to invite Dr. Julie Kozisek to present a writing workshop. The topics for the presentation would include a review of the 6-traits of effective writing and ideas parents could apply at home as they help their children further develop writing skills. We are proposing two 60-minute sessions, which would be held on one evening. The first session would focus on strategies to support kindergarten through second grade students and the second session would focus on strategies to support third through fifth grade students. The fee for two presentations led by Dr. Kozisek is $300. We will publicize this event by sending invitations to all Fredstrom parents and by including this announcement in our weekly and monthly school communication publications.
