Framing Lewis & Clark's Plant Samples

Juniper, honey suckle and snow on the mountain are all plant species discovered and identified by Lewis and Clark while traveling through the plains. They sketched them, took a sample and identified them at the request of President Thomas Jefferson. Today’s eighth grade American history students will have the opportunity to look at the plant samples through this activity. To enhance the study of study of Lewis and Clark’s journey, we asked parents to help provide samples of the plants Lewis and Clark found while they were in the plains. We have the pressed plant samples and need to put them under glass and in frames so they will be preserved. Funding this grant will allow 125 middle school social studies students at two middle schools to examine the plant samples, sketch them and learn the names of plant species, just as Lewis and Clark did on their journey.
