Science Project and Zoo Trip
The Fund-A-Need project I am proposing relates to our Science curriculum. We study Chemistry, Rocks and Minerals, Scientific Investigations and the Wetlands. During the Rocks and Minerals unit students use a variety of rocks and minerals, which I would like to make into kits. My goal is to obtain containers having a number of sections to organize the rocks and minerals so students can easily use the samples during experiments and investigations. Secondly, throughout the year students learn by note-taking skills and how to use graphic organizers, which prepare them for Middle School and beyond. We use spiral notebooks, colored pencils, colored pens, and pocket portfolios to help organize students’ thoughts and work. It has been found through research that using different colors help our brains to categorize and retrieve information. Students then use their organizers and notes to work on assignments, take quizzes, and prepare for mandated tests.
Finally students study different types of wetlands and issues related to wetlands. I would like to take our entire 5th grade to the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo. The new Kingdom of the Night exhibit displays many animals which are found in wetlands. It has a swamp area which shows the swamp habitat with the animals that would be found living there. Throughout the zoo students observe a variety of habitats and animals that help them gain an appreciation of the environment around them as well as learn about specific animals and plants. This trip entails the cost of buses for the day, entrance into the zoo, and an IMAX presentation, which relates to our Social Studies curriculum (the Lewis and Clark Expedition).
Science is an area we need to help students become excited about. Hands-on activities and experiences make science enticing to our young people, encouraging them to want to become the scientists, inventors, and doctors of our future.
